VINCENNES, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A local candy shop is celebrating 70 years.
Charlie’s Candies in Vincennes is rich in history and sweets. For 70 years, Charlies Candies has been a staple for the Vincennes community to enjoy and as the holidays are right around the corner, now is the perfect time to stop in.
As a way to celebrate the shop’s history, the group of owners is dressing up for 70 days and taking you on a journey to the past. Inside the shop, you can find a sign that asks to share your favorite memory at Charlie’s Candies.
“We are having people bring in stories daily and we are really enjoying that. People will come back in and tell us their stories when they went to the back door, they went down the basement steps and saw things that way,” said Co-owner Lorrinda Ellermann.
What started as a candy shop beneath the home of Charles and Lorethea Hamke in 1955 has moved upstairs to accommodate the community. Though it might look a little different, it still has the same charm.
Most everything you see is homemade with the original recipes. For some, the shop is a tradition, lasting generations.
“It is a blessing to get to hear from these people year after year and they’ll call us and give us an update on how they are. But with that, we also get some sorrow because you know we’ll find out that some of our best customers for so many years have passed on. But then their families, their children, will call and still want to place those orders,” said Ellermann.
Ellermann said the turtles and kettle corn are the most popular during the holiday season. She also said they have already begun making orders for the holiday season.
Be sure to stop in and share your favorite memory or story you have at Charlie’s Candies.
