TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— The future of the Vigo County School Corporation front and center Tuesday night.
During a Sunshine meeting of the Vigo County Council, the council discussed the establishment of a possible oversight board that would help oversee funding and improvements of Vigo County schools. The school corporation also hoped the County Council would consider helping to pay for upgrades at local schools.
However, in October, members voted 4-3 to approve an ordinance that prevents the county from creating an oversight board. Councilman Steve Ellis says at this time there is too big of a risk and too many unknowns about this oversight board.
Ellis is also concerned about possible litigation, but he says there is still a chance for the board to be established.
“I think one thing that we at least presented this evening, and I think they have a full understanding of it, is we presented them a way to still come up with $100,000, to still have the oversight committee, to still do everything they need to do without putting the county at risk,” Ellis said.
Commissioner Mark Clinkenbeard says doing nothing is not an option. He understands there’s a lot of passion about this issue, and sometimes the voices can get loud. But something needs to be done.
“The whole thing about what we’re trying to do here is to use funds that are already available so that our taxpayers may not have to have a tax increase. We believe that these first two steps, with a new high school and the renovations at West Vigo, can be done with funds that are already there,” Clinkenbeard said.
The issue will be voted on at the council meeting next Tuesday.
