VINCENNES, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – It’s officially 2020 and cities across the world welcomed the new year in their own ways.
Vincennes celebrated with what’s considered one of the wackiest events: the watermelon drop.
Twenty watermelons fell to a splatform below at the strike of midnight. The celebration ended with a fireworks display.
The watermelon drop attracts visitors from all over the country. One couple visiting from Maryland says attending various celebrations on New Year’s Eve is a tradition.
“We go all over the country to different drops,” says Gail Plate.
Skip Plate adds, “the splatform is what really caught our attention. We wanted to see the splatform.”
This was the 12th year for the event.
