TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Syrian rebels captured the capital city of Damascus overnight, toppling the Assad Regime that has ruled the county for generations.
In less than two weeks the militant group Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham has moved across the county taking city after city, including Aleppo and Homs.
President Bashar Al-Assad has now fled the county and relinquished power. According to NBC News, the ousted dictator has fled to Russia.
Across Damascus, there has been scenes of celebration for what rebels say is a new chapter in the 13-year-long civil war that has ravaged Syria.
Here in Terre Haute, a local attorney with ties to the Syrian and Lebanese communities said these communities are not upset with last night events.
“The Lebanese are not upset to see this happen; the Syrian people are not upset to see this happen. The only one who may be upset, perhaps are the Russians, his allies, as well as the Iranians, his allies. The rest of the world is probably cheering on, as we all are, that the Assad government is history and now we look forward to a smooth transition to whatever comes next,” said local attorney Micheal Ellis.
NBC News reports, President Biden is calling the fall of the Assad Regime in Syria a “historic opportunity.”
