TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Around 121,000 people in Indiana are living with Dementia and nearly 80% of them are being cared for by their loved ones, according to Thrive West Central’s Dementia outreach specialist Amy Schorr.
Schorr said that West Central Indiana has received grant funding that will help them provide respite time to caregivers. This $6,000 grant will come from the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.
This funding will be used to bring in someone from an outside agency to care for a person with dementia for a few hours per week, said Schorr.
“Studies have shown that these types of dementia respite programs provide respite for that caregiver and can improve their health and wellness, and also improves socialization and interaction for the person living with dementia,” said Schorr.
Schorr also said that Thrive hopes to help five to six families with this funding. Interested families can find a referral form here.
